Bear in cage snarling at men with dogs outside cage. Cage is outdoors next to Esso gas station, probably in the North Carolina mountains.
Photograph appears in the January 19, 1952 issue of THE STATE magazine with the caption, "So, that's what we're to chase! says these two eager bear hounds. It's been dry in the mountains this winter, and difficult for dogs to follow a scent. So each night before a hunt, hunters around Crossnore take their dogs over to a caged bear at a filling station to 'sharpen their noses.' The dogs look as if they'd like to get at the bear. And vice versa."
